West Rim Trail with the Youth

A couple days ago I shared all the amazing youth activities that Jason helps organize as bishop of our congregation.  This activity, however, was so epic that it deserves a post of its own.  In May Jason took both the Young Men and Young Women in backpacking along the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park.  An adventure like this requires a lot of effort and planning, but they pulled it off!  Judging from the photos, it was epic.

Due to seasonal road closures, the group had to tack a couple of extra miles onto the beginning of their route.  This made for a LONG first day, but they made it.  Amazingly, the youth they even complain!  (Jason says the adults weren't that bad either.)

Off on adventure.  I think AnnMarie was happy to join Magnus on this expedition.

Yeah, this would be why the cars couldn't come through.  I'm not sure this was Shige's idea of a good time, but he and his friend "John" were good sports.

The views are unparalleled.  I think God took a little extra time with this corner of the earth.

Unlike when we last came through here, Potato Hollow Springs was more like a lake.

Setting up camp.  The best part about backpacking is that there's not much to it.  Eli and Talia look like pros.  Brooklyn didn't make it because she was celebrating her friend Lily's birthday at the Grand America Hotel.

Wrapped in tarps, the group hunkered down and slept until morning.  From left to right we have AnnMarie, Magnus, Shige, Tak, Eli, Zach, Kate, Ben, Talia, and Audrey.

An afternoon rain shower left the group a bit soggy.

These three gals had a pretty awesome time.

There's sure a lot of water in the Virgin River.

Heading home via Walter's Wiggles.  They backpacked a full sixteen miles before finally collapsing onto the shuttle.

A sweet trip made even sweeter with ice cream.  Jason, I know you are SOOOO busy with countless demands on your time.  On behalf of all the youth, thank you for making this happen!  It's an experience they'll never forget.
