I Heart NY

After weeks and weeks of silence (only 2 blog posts in the month of September), I've cranked out 10 posts in the last seven days.  Can you tell I'm a woman with a mission?  I'm still frightfully behind, so lezzgo.

08/08 dawned beautifully on Long Island.  With lovely weather on our side, we decided to venture into the city, taking the LIRR.

Vytis looks like he's enjoying all of the trains.

As for Papa Kay, he appreciated how the subways are now air conditioned, unlike when he rode them as a missionary many years ago.

Our first adventure? A ferry ride out to Staten Island and back. Can't beat the price! (It's free.)

Lady Liberty is still standing proud.  (As are the hundreds of tourists all trying to get a picture.)

Not to worry, Callie's seen it before.  (The cause of the yawn more likely stems from sharing a room with overtired children.)

Anders is as excited as his mom is fatigued.

Always one to understand how things work, Eli pays close attention as we pull into the ferry terminal.

For lunch, we found a cute little playground in Battery Park.

Better keep your feet up, Kes!  There are critters around.  The squirrel was cute.  The rat, not so much. (With apologies to Katelyn.  We like yours.)

Beautiful view of the cityscape.  I love how the clouds are reflected.

Hey, look who we picked up!  Alesia had an appointment in the morning but was able to join us for most of the day's journey.  We were so happy to have some extra time together.

Talia's looking cool.  Plus, she's grown! Callie, I think you're gonna need some mighty tall heels to catch up.

Group photo!

Papa Kay, come join us for the silliness.  We're glad Kestutis made it out unscathed.

Next stop, curios. We rather thought Brooklyn should be allowed to walk away with the sweatshirt.  After all, it has her name on it.❤❤❤❤

Talia certainly matched all the merch.  She's playing her own version of Where's Waldo in the second pic.

Lina and NomiAnn are enjoying the city vibe.  The Vedeckis family were already experts on the city, having just spent several days in China Town.

Here's Egle with the boys.  Vytis and Anders were so excited to have new friends!

The Fulton Center is one of my very favorite spaces in NYC.

This year it was extra fun because of all these whimsical animal sculptures, created by a husband and wife team.  We loved how interactive and inviting they all were!

Whoops!  We may be interacting a bit too much with this one.  We hadn't realized that there was a giant line of people waiting to take pictures from the other side.

Taking a moment to reflect at the 9/11 memorial.  Kestutis, Callie, and my parents all went up the World Trade Center about a month before the towers came down.

Many thanks to Eli, the sherpa, who schlepped our bags through the whole city.

We were all a little fatigued by this point, so Kes revived the group with ice cream at Columbus Circle.  Callie and I added the mango.

New energy for swing dancing!  Anders looks like he wants to join in.

A perfect evening in the park.  It's funny--as much as I love the outdoors, I have an easier time imagining myself living in a big city than a tiny town.

While walking around, I got to hear Alesia talk about the time her NYC apartment literally caught on fire!  Wow.  Alesia went to graduate school at the Teachers College at Columbia University, so these are her stomping grounds.

Pretty fantastic place to play.

Speaking of playing, we all joined in a round of "Down by the banks" while waiting for the train back to Long Island.

Even more creative was the role playing game that the kids came up with on the way home.  Maybe it was mafia?  Whatever it was, it involved multiple dramatic deaths...  I dunno Kes.  Our kids might be a bad influence on yours.

Hope the sunset makes up for it.
