Memorial Day Camping Through the Years

Before Memorial Day, Papa Kay gave Eli and Annika a job opportunity.  He invited them to go through the blog and document each of our prior Memorial Day camping experiences.  He even offered to pay them a dollar per year!

Well, my kids failed to complete their homework.  Papa Kay, since I know you are a bit lonely with NomiAnn out of the country (she's exploring Italy with my Aunt Janet and Aunt Alison), I thought I would pick up the slack and make a list.  Here's a rundown of all our former Memorial Day excursions as recorded on the blog.

2006 Wildcat Den State Park, Iowa

2007 Moline, Illionis and the Quad Cities, Iowa

2008 Indian Cave State Park, Nebraska

2009 Malgrat de Mar and Barcelona, Spain

2010 Little Grassy Lake, Illinois to Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

2011 Glenwood Springs, Colorado

2012 Moab, Utah

2013 Omaha, Nebraska (glamping on Capitol Ave)

2014 Fort Robinson, Nebraska

2015 Nauvoo, Illinois

2016 Badlands and Blackhills, South Dakota

2017 Mesa Verde, Colorado

2018 Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado

2019 Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah

2020 Posey Lake, Utah

2021 Yellowstone, Wyoming

2022 Durango, Colorado

That's sixteen years of real camping, seventeen if you count Omaha 2013--all in unique places!  Eight states, two countries, six national parks.  Four years in Colorado, three in Utah, two in Illinois, two in Iowa, and two in Nebraska.  What a wealth of memories--all for the price of a camping spot.

Dad, I hope you enjoy strolling down memory lane as much as I did.  Thanks for helping this happen year after year, and here's to many Memorial Day adventures to come.

Wow! These are indeed precious camping memories. Great blasts for the past! I realize it has not always been convenient, and much of the preparatory, planning work has fallen to you, and Cathy, Kara McCall. Thank you so VERY much!! ... It has all been so worth it in my view (with the possible exception of freezy, windy Posey Lake, and maybe sand stormy Moab ... Joke). Thank you all for supporting this tradition in such flexible, kind, and loving ways.

Keep Smiling! Remember Who You Are! Stay in Touch!

Someone "Anonymous" emailed me the following when I couldn't quite remember where we camped. The information seemed great to have on record, so I'm stashing the update here. Thanks, Papa Kay!

"Thanks so much for doing the blog research necessary to reconstruct our shared Memorial Day campout experiences. It is so fun to see the growth in your family members over the years.

It is a little thing, and may be more work to fix than the resulting correction is worth, but, I suggest you change the 2007 Muscatine, Iowa entry to read either Quad Cities, or Moline, Illinois. We actually visited Muscatine, Iowa along with the Wildcat Den camping experience in 2006, not 2007.

I know that our actual campsite was on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river (I think in Moline). However, we toured all four of the quad cities, including a river ride between Davenport and Moline (or Rock Island). We had icre cream at Whitey's and toured the outside of a John Deere farm implement display. We attended church in a Moline ward. It rained a bit, so one day we visited the Davenport Public Library to stay a bit dry. Our campsite was not very big, or fancy ... and pretty close to a major roadway. I only include this information to let you know I distinctly recall the difference between our 2006 and 2007 encampments. In 2006 we traveled from Wildcat Den to Muscatine for Ice and other homemade ice cream ingredients. We played on swings with your youngsters (I was able to do underdogs in those days) and looked over the river where an old pearl button factory used to be located."
