To be completely honest, I was pretty bummed about our ski season when Annika entered the hospital in December. We'd already purchased season passes, but she wasn't supposed to hit the slopes for six months post-transplant (sternal precautions). Somebody would need to stay home with her, plus it felt kind of mean to leave her behind. Definitely felt like Groundhogs Day: a repeat of last season when Jason wasn't allowed to ski because of his healing ACL. Plus, we all felt bad about January when Talia's best friend Clara broke her hip while skiing with our family.
Fortunately, come February the ski season got better--lots of great powder days and no more injuries. Yay!
Here are some photo highlights. On February 3rd Talia, Eli, and I used our Wasatch Benefit to ski at Snowbird. So fun to explore some place new! I'm hopeful that next year we'll make it up to Alta and Deer Valley as well.
March 1st. Jason, Justin and Eli enjoy Brighton. Such fantastic views of Timp!
Saturday, March 8. Ski date. ❤ Jason and I headed up to Brighton and enjoyed bluebird skies with fresh powder up to our thighs. The conditions were so great that I even skied Milly bowl for the first time in years!
Skiing as a couple makes us smile. No matter how stressed Jason is, getting out onto the slopes brings out the joy.
Plus, where else can you play hide-n-seek with an entire cabin?

Here's Callie helping Anders with his gear. Anders is a great skier (as is Eila), but wins the award for wildest ski adventure of the year. He was skiing through the trees and decided he wanted to carve his own path. When his Mom suggested he not go that way because there was a creek, he stopped, pouted a bit, then toppled right into the water! Callie literally had to fish him out of the stream. Not only that, when she went to yank him out, his feet came out of his boots, leaving him in socks with his skis still buried in the current! We've had some crazy things happen while skiing, but Anders' story might be the wackiest yet. We weren't there the day this happened, but the legend continues.
Talia's very favorite thing to do is plop into the soft powder. It's never hard to get the others to follow suit. Eila particularly loves collapsing into the soft snow as well.
While we didn't run into anyone from Annika's cardiology team, our hope was that no one would recognize her underneath all the layers. #incognitotransplantkid
In case you can't tell, this snow bunny is Eila.
Pulled pork fries for the win! This was the moment Anders discovered that he loves coleslaw.
I sure love all these munchkins! Underneath the helmets we have Eli, Annie, and Talia. Can't wait to add Brooklyn back in next year.
April 3rd. Two days later, and Annika and I were back on the slopes. Can you tell we were going stir-crazy?
Oh wait, look who we have with us. Siblings! Yay for spring break.
Silly Mommy, lifts are for kids.
April 11th. Girls morning out! Twice this season I went skiing for a few hours on Friday morning with our friend and neighbor Robin. What a treat! The snow was pretty slushy, but the warmth was luxurious and we had the resort to ourselves.
April 12th. Final day of the season for us, plus the last day of night skiing at Brighton. It was so warm that we skied without jackets.
But warm weather wasn't the best part. The best part was skiing with Cousin Greg, who came all the way from New York to ski with us! My Aunt Janet also came, but sadly Alesia missed out on this part of the fun (that's a crazy story for another post.)
Jason looks happy and snazzy in his new ski goggles. He upgraded to a pair with better visibility after he skied straight into a rope that clothes-lined him at the waist and tried to decapitate him.
To make this ski day extra special, we decided to tailgate and roast hot dogs.
Just watch out for Eila's ammunition.
Getting to the top, we learned that we were the very last evening chair on Milly lift for the entire season. So glad we caught that final sunset!
From left to right, we have Greg, Eli, Kara, and Callie. Thanks again for joining us, Gregory!
Can't wait to hit the slopes again next season.
In fact, some skiers didn't wear any shirt at all!
This brings casual dining to a whole new level.
The Long Islanders soak in the scene. Not the best snow we've had, but we hope they liked the company!
With tummies full, some of the crew was ready to head down the mountain after our hot dog roast. Meanwhile, the rest of us headed over to Milly. Borrowing from my kids' lingo, the sunset was fire!
Plus, we all chuckled during the lift ride up about how Callie and Greg tried to ski without snow--the dry road makes for a sudden stop!
Can't wait to hit the slopes again next season.
