Hogle and Henry: Our Favorite Zoos

We love the Hogle zoo.  We really do.  There are elephants...

giraffes...

lions...

...and an adorable orangutan youngster being cared for by his big sister.

We've prickled with porcupines...

blushed at the sound of giant tortoises mating...

...and gaped wide-mouthed as a boa constrictor swallows his lunch.

We love coming to the zoo with friends. I brought my preschool class last spring to celebrate making it through the entire alphabet.  All the way from A, a animal to Z, z, zoo.

Kate joined us for the day, helping to run herd on the youngsters.

Just in case the real elephants aren't entertaining enough, this big boy is sure to please.

Or how about the lion drinking fountain?  Definitely a classic.

Our kids love the playground as well.

Ahoy, mateys!

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the splash pad.

Just don't waste water!  Here's Talia with a few of her classmates during water conservation day at the zoo.

Our kids also enjoyed the recent "Bugzilla" exhibit.  Nearly gave me nightmares.

Eli with his BFF, Chloe.  Eli was SO excited when Chloe came up from St. George for a zoo visit.

Mandibles like you've never seen.

And hanging together on the ladybug.
Yes, we love the Hogle zoo.

BUT...a word to the well-intentioned zoo keeper who told me that she didn't plan on visiting Omaha's zoo because she is a zoo snob who only visits accredited zoos.  Well, here are some photos from our most recent visit to Henry Doorly over the summer.

They've upgraded their playground.

As kids romp around this gigantic tree house, there are monkeys scurrying around right over head.

If monkeys aren't your thing, you can always play with the goats at one of several petting zoo sites...

...or pretend you are a caterpillar morphing in a chrysalis.

You can also become a prairie dog peeking out of your burrow as real prairie dogs pop up all around.

Brooklyn took Eila to feed the budgies.

I think she enjoyed it.

Now Talia, no more stealing the bird eggs.

The river front is pretty exciting.

Eila and Annika would have gladly played there for hours.

Of course, just in case that's not enough excitement, there's always the splash pad.

Both the Hogle and Henry Doorly zoos have rhinos...

...but in Omaha you get to see them from the Skyfari.

Can't get enough of this baby gorilla...

...plus a giraffe seriously nibbled Annika's hairbow.

Feeding the sting rays was my personal favorite.

Eila wasn't quite sure what to think at first.

Eventually she got comfy with the marine life.

Annika got completely doused by one of these "puppies of the sea."  Luckily she had a great attitude: "He splashed me because he loves me!"

Yes, even Baby Anders thought the zoo was great.

Salt Lake, we love you, but when it comes to zoos, Omaha is where it's at.
